Basics of the Security Survey

A security survey is an important on-site examination of a facility or residence used to determine the present security strengths & weakness... make recommendations... and improve the overall safety & security of that faciltiy/residence.

It is simply a 'tool' that is the basis for recommendations of action.

There are basically three types of surveys that can be conducted:

1.) A building inspection

2.) A security survey

3.) A security analysis

* the security analysis is more in-depth than the security survey

I recommend that a Security Survey is done:

1.) On an annual basis

2.) Following a crisis within the company

3.) After a theft; breaking & entering; etc.

4.) Upon request

Ensure that prior to beginning, you have a complete & professional checklist. Interview people from all areas... take pictures... and analyse past issues and current threats.

Once completed, many times the recommendations will be sent up the chain of command along with purchase requisitions or capital expenditure requests.

Expect a tough time... denials... and requests for justifications. Remember, security is NOT convenient and most people will not be as ready to move forward as you. That's ok... it's the nature of the game.

Just be professional, accurate and speak/write in "their" language. Who is "their"? The people with the $$$!

:-)
